I was fortunate enough to be able to attend TEDxSMU on Saturday at the Owens Art Center on the SMU campus. It was a full day from 8am – 10pm with the conference and after party. A majority of the speakers have a 18 minute slot to speak on their subject. There is no Q&A. I have a few friends who attend the annual TED Conference in Long Beach every year.
If you haven’t heard of this group before, be sure and check out their taped online live recordings.
It was a very thought provoking day to say the least. Some of the speakers included:
“The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind”, William Kamkwamba – was inpsirational as he took it upon himself to create a windmill for electricty and water pump for his family and the village. He had to figure this out on all his own without the benefit of computers or Google.
The “Mathmagician”- Arthur Benjamin – who is able to square 5 digit numbers in his head faster than you can type the numbers into a calculator.
The architect, Joshua Prince-Ramus talked about the new Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre and the way it can morph into any type of performance needed. It was amazing to see it transform in a short amount of time with time lapse video.
Greg Harper is Mr. Gadget for ABC News and reports on the latest and greatest gadgets that are on the market. He enterained us at the after party with a portable projector, camera, and other toys.
An amazing day that had me wanting more – it went by extremely quickly and motivates me to attend one of the official TED conferences in the future.
